Lvell, March 18. Alpins.— The manager reports : " The extension of the. No 10 main south level has beeu carried on during the week, but owing to the hardness of the stone and the large size of the reef (which it is necessary to take out) very little hi-adwa'y has been made. We are now carrying along a body of stone fully 18ft in width, and it is still wideuI ing. In tucb a large reef it is impossible to form an opinion as to its average quality, fhe leading ' fetope has been carried along for a distance of 25ft, but work has been temporarily suspended

The size of the reef inthe leading stope averages sft in width, and in tbe sixth and seventh stopes it is fiom SfC to 10ft wide in the incline uprise above the top stopes. We have broken into the south winze 110 m No. 9 level, and are now engaged in taking out tli^s reraaiudfcr of the fctone. Here tbe reer still continues considerably broken. Jn the Lyell Creek Company's old uprise woik lias been discontinued for the present, as all the ava labls room for storing stone is occupied, the work of erecting a division in the battery paddock having been delayed until the general clearing up at the end of the month. The pul!ej T3T 3 have been placed in position above ths maia thaft. The air winch has also been put iv its place, and the bailing of the shaft was started to-day. Everj thing is working well and smoothly. In accordance with instructions, two m«»n were put on last Monday to crosscut east from No. 4 level, and a distance of sft has bsen driven. The country is hard and very wet. During the week 170 tons of stone have been sent to the battery. The result of f craping tiis top plates is 130oz amalgam from 260 ions of stone tieated."
