THE SILYERSTREAM MURDERER. Wellington, March 20.
Philpott, sentenced to death for the murder of his mate Hawthorne at Silverstre&m, is to be executed at 8 a.m. on Wednesday. Mr Jellicoe has sent a telegram to Lord Ranfurly denying that he applied to the Solicitor- ' general for a new trial. He only asked i permission for the prisoner to appeal on a point \ of law respecting the admiasibiiity of certain , evidence. He begs his Excellency not to sign the warrant till tho Council has submitted his statement to him, and slates that this course was followed by Lord Onslow in the Chemis case, and commutation of sentence followed. 1 he equinoctial gales are blowing at Wellington with even more than usual severity. For some ' time the weather has been alternately wet and I windy, the drought having quite broken up, and the hills are looking green once more, 1 On Monday a stiff gale was blgwing. ),
