CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
Messrs A. aud T. Inglis have just completed extensive alterations and, additions to their premises in George street;. The old offices aud parcels room hava been removed and thrown into the miliinery department, which has beeu in consequence very much enlarged. The fittings of this department have been altered, and new ones have been erected round the extension, giviDg this and the adjoining department a roomy and very attractive appearance. The carpet and mantle departments have also been considerably altered, and new fittings and counters ot figured red pine have been carried round each. The comfort of the customers has been considered in the alterations mentioned &i well as the convenience of the proprietors in working such large premise*, and it is expected that one and all will fitid things very convenv- j ent. These alterations necessitate a new | position being round for the offices and delivery I room. These are now placed at the rear of the 1 main building, and are housed in brick additions 80fb x 28Ffc and 20ft high in- |

The walls of the latter are neatly lined from floor to roof, and the open roof, which is of light iron principals, is diagonally lined and moulded in bays. The omces are neatly lined in the same way, and the ceilings panelled. Two of the offices are } finished with moulded and panelled dadoes of I native timbers, highly polished, and the general office is fitted with counters and desks of similar timbers. The feveial rooms are lighted at night from an abundance of gas fittiDga, and during the day-tima with window and roof ' light. At the back of the parcels room there 1 is a loading platform leading into the yard fo? loading the vans. Ah the north end of the additions a building 50f fc x 271t has been altered i and lined, and new openings have been put into i the walla, allowing it to be worked from the 1 delivery room as well as from the new store opposite. The walls and ceilings have been { neatly painted, giving to this portion a very
aitr!\cL"pfo sijearonce. Opposite this bciidinfc a new brick store has been erected, tb« dimension? of which are 68ft x 44ft, X 22ft high from floor to roof. The store is. lighted by six skylights, and the rcof is sarkedt and felted and covered with iron. The front? facing Sfc. Andrew street is cemented an<^ finished wibh moulded pediment and finiai^ moulded cornice, and string courses, the base* being finished with rock-faced Port Chalmem stone, completed with tooled margins. The premises are well worth a visit afc the Dresenff time, every department being heavily stocked with an assortment of all classes of goods, recently augmented by the arrival of large shipments of autumn and wiutec goods. The firm is to be complimented upon the energy and enterprise in building up what may be considered as one of the largest and most sue« ceS9ful, if not absolutely the largest and mosfc successful, retail businesses in the colony. Tha alterations have been carried oafc from the plans and the suoervisiou of Mr James Hislop (architect), Mr J Barton being the clerk of works, and Mr John Luon contractor.
