Cou-tiy Sales.— Donald Reto and Co. held their first Cantral Ofcago sheep sale at their yards at Hyde on Friday, the 11th inst. The entry consisted of 2951, all crot.9breds except 353. There was a vary large attendance of farmers and graziers from Maniototo, Strath-Taieri, Macraes, and the surrounding district, as well an dealers from Oamaru, Taieri, and Gore. Wethers and breeding ewes met a splendid devnand, and every line of -these offered was keenly competed for. Lambs were very hard to place at anything like satisfactory piices, but all were disposed of except one line. Had there been double the entry of wethers and breeding ewes there would have been no difficulty in placing the lofc, and prices were on the whole fairly satisfactory. We sold 249 four aad six-tooth whethers at 7s 3d, 24 four-tooth wethers at Ss, 4S crosabred do at 7s, 427 two-tooth do at 6a 7d, 125 two-tooth wethers at 5s 93, 109 do (small) at Ss 2d, 140 do at 6s sd, 100 do and ewes afc ss, 223 fuli-mouthed crossbred ewes at 4s 7d, 70 do at 43 6d, 7 crossbred ewes at 2s 3d, 282 merino do at Is 3d, 71 do at Is Bd, 55 lambs at 5s 6d, 306 do at 4s 3d, 37 do (small) at 2s sd, 315 crossbred ewes at 4s 9d.— Slaclkan and Co report having held their usual monthly sale at Stirling on Tuesday. The entry was a good one, but harvesting operations interfered considerably with the attendance, but nevertheless there was a very fair turn out. Business was not active, but most of the offe-riuga were placed, either under the hammer or privately, at the following rates :— Pigs, to 27a ; sheep, to 8s 3d ; lambs, io 6a ; cattle, to £4. We sold 231 shetp and Is»mb3, 6 pigs, 37 head cattle," and passed out several lots. Rabbitskins. — The catalogues on Monday were niad» up almost entirely of off-sea«on ekins, there beiag only an occasional lot of winters couiinj; forward at this season of the year. The attcndaiice of buyers was larger than usual, and competition was very spirited, all the'catalogues being cleared at prices which must be satisfactory to tbe veadors. Sheepskin?. — There was the usual attendance of buyers at the sales on Tuesday, which were held at the Chamber of Commerce Hall Moderale catalogues were submitted, and all classes of skins soW narricularly well. Green pelts sold at Is 7A to 2a 4d ; do lambskin*, Is Sd to 2s 7d ; dry crossbreds, 2s to os 7d ; do merinos, Is 9d to 3s lid ; do pelts, 4d to Is lOd. Hides. — Values are about the same as last week. There are buyers for an unlimited number in the market. Quotations are : Extra heavy ox, up to 4d per 1b ; good heavy, 34 to 3Jd ; medium, 2£d to 2|d ; light, 2d to 2},} ; inferior, lid to IJdTallnw and Rough Fat.— There is better competition in the local market than, there has bsen for a considerable time, and at the present moment both rough fat and rendered can be placed at prices slightly in advance of those lately ruling. Quotations are : For prime readered, 13s to 14s 3d ; medium, lls to 12s ; inferior, 9s to 10s 6d ; rough fat, 8s to ]0s per cwt. Grain. — Whc*t : The market for this ceraal has shown vspid improvsmeut during the p*st fortnight, aud has now reached the highest lavel recorded for some time. Jt is questionable how much further this_ improvement will go. The demand at present is strong, and buyers ars keen for all sorts of wheat in prime condition. The quality of the new grain coming to hand is in most cases excellent. Some of the samples from the north have a slightly pinched appearance, but the Taieri wheat, being well sivad and tlueahed in good drying weather is mostly in first class order Quotations are: For prim* milling velvet, 4s 6d to4s9d; luscan ami red wheat, 4s 5d to 4s Sd ; mattiuai.to good, 4s to 4s 4d ; fowl wheat (whole), 3s 3d to 3s 9d ; do (broken or damaged), 2s 6d to 33 per bushel (sacks in). Oits : The new season's oats are »ow making their appearance in the market. Nearly all those to hand are well grown and of good colour, having been harvested ia. good weather. We trust that growers in the south, whoie crops are somewhat backward, may be fiqually .fortunate. The demand for local fee-i purposes continues fa'rly active, and for this braDch of the trade old oats are still preferred. Millers are directing some attention to new oats ; while at the ruliug pric* shippers are almost out of the market, so that sales of anything like really large lines are at present difficult to effect. Ssecial lines, such as duns, black oats, etc., suitable for seed, and Sutherland* of milliug quality, meet with fair sale 3at quotations. Quotations : Long Tarrars. Duns, *c , 2e 2d to 2$ 4Jd ; prima milling, 2s Id to 2s 3d ; good to best feed, 2i to 2s o£d ; medium, Is lOd to Is lid par bushel (sacks extra). Barley.— A good demand exists for all sorts, prime malting being most favoured, and all coming forward is readily taken at quotations. Prime iwalting sells at 4s 6d to 4s 9d ; extra bright to 5s ; Milling, 3s 9d to 4s 4d ; feed, 2i 6d to 33 6d per bushel (sacks extra). Potatoes.— Supplied during the past week have been belotf the average in consequence of farmers being busy with harvest operations. Derwents are most in favour, but att sorts are saleable, and in sympathy with the short supply values have advanced about "Os per ton. Best Derwents are worth £5 7s 6d <o £5 15a ; good, £i to £5 53 ; best kidneys, £5 to £5 7s 61 ; others, £4 10s to £5 per ton (sacks in). Chaff. — Ths market has been poorly supplied, and all consignments of good quality aie readily quitted. The demand ii chiefly for heavy old chaff, which is offering sparingly. New chaff, if <»ood and in condition for keep, is also in request, but consignments liable to beat are not in favour, and are quitted with difficulty. Quotations : Best oaten sheaf —old, £4 to £4 10s : ne-v, £3 123 6d to £4 ; medium to good, £3 to £3 10a per ton (bags extra).
