UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
A meetirjg of the University Council, held yesterday, was attended by the Chancellor (Mr Justice Williams), Professor Shand, Professor ; Sale, the Rev. A. Cameron, Dr Burns, and Mr i D. R. White. , The Finance Committee reported having met on the 2nd inst., aDd^passed accounts for payment amounting to £605 18s lOd. The bank book showed a credit balance cf £328 10a 2d. Tbe Registrar reported that one of the pastoral tenants was in arrears with his rent, and he was authorised to notify the tenant that & fortnight would be allowed in which to pay ths reab. Ha also reported that a new grinding machine was urgently required for the School ot Mines afc a eosb of about £15. Tha committee recommended the procuring of the grinding machine in Dunedm, and referred the matter of the other alterations to the council. The committee appended to their report the following letter from the i Minister for Mines : — " In reply to your ; letter of the 14-th of February last, I have l to inform you that Mr James Alien, M.H.R.. ! addressed the Minister for Mines on the 7ch of ' January last, pointing out that a further teaching collection of minerals and specimens foe analysis was required, and also that further provision should be made by additional furnaces, benches, &c., for students, and alterations to the cyanide plant, at an esti- ( mated total cost of £100. If you will forward ' a schedule in detail showing the additions to 1 fche experimental plant, which are immediately j required, the Minister for Minea will bo pre- ! pared to authorise & subsidy at the rate oE ! pound for pound up to the amount of £50. I ! am to add i hat a voucher for tha second instali ment of £250 for the year 1897-98 will shortly i be passed for payment." — The report was , adopted. | The committee appointed to make the neceisary arrangements for the appointment of a 1 Professor of Biology r.nd Curator of the | Museum reported that the necessary documents 1 were drawn up and sent Home to the Agenti general. A cable was received to the effect. ' that the commissioners had appointed Professor W. H. Benham, D.Sc, F.R.S. A more recent cable had been received stating that Professor Besuham wa3 unable to leave until the end of March. Professor Vines, one of the commissioners, had written a letter to the council drawing attention to the important position botany now occupied, and suggesting that as soon as the university was in a position to do so botany should be separated from the biological class. — The committee were authorised to endeavour to make arrangements for the carrying on of the work in Professor Benham'e classes until he arrives. , The committee appointed to reporfe on the im- | provements to the Leith reported that the plans \ and specifications had been received from Mr i Petsrie and wera now in the hands of the colonial | engineer to report. '
