THE WELLINGTON ELECTION. CRUSHING DEFEAT OF MR KIRK.
Wellington, March 9. The election passed off very quietly — in fact, it was the most sedate election held in Wellington. This was partly owing to the extra number of polling boctb.3 preventing undue crushing and partly to the Instructions given to the returning officers and police to allow no interference with voters. There were 16 bcoths, and Mt Duthie had a majority at 12 of them, the final corrected result being : — JohnDuthie 7283 4 R. C. Kirk 6254- ' Majority, 1029. The details of the poling are ; —
When the result was made known Mr Duthie very brieflj" returned thanks. Mr Kirk, speaking later on, said he had abstained from personalities, and had fought as good a fight ss he could. He did noi believe the Labour party had split their vote. The Prenrer also epoke fr. m a carriage in Lambton quay. PI'S s&id_he heped that the next election would reverse tbe decision, and that, the best man wou'd have been Mr Kirk. A great many who now said they were supporter* of Mr Duthie would not have darei say so last night. Tfacre had been an undercurrent for the last foar or five days ; but, j notwithstanding the pressure that had been j brought to btar against them, they had fought : a good fight, aad the result shotvtd thafc there i were over 6000 people who f till believed in progress and enlightenment and the prosperity | of the towa.
