ARRIVAL OF THE PIONEER SHIPS.
Although the Philip Laing got away before the John WicJchffe, the latter was the first to arrive, which she did 011 the 22nd March, after a passage of 116 days ; but she did not sail tip to Port Chalmers till the next day, March 23rd, which date is therefore considered the anniversary of the settlement. It is most difficult to get a correct list of the passengers, as no official record appears to have been kept, and it is only from survivors that the names can be obtained. The passengers who came to the Otago settlement by the John It ickbffe weie, so far as we have been able to ascertain, as follows :—: —

Some time after the settlement one of Captain Cargill's daughters married Mr. W. H. Cutten, one married Mr. J. H. Harris, and one married Mr. Johnstone. Mrs. Cutteu and Mrs. Johnstone are still living. Mr. John Cargill married a daughter of Mr. John Jones. Master Spencer Cargill went back to England. A daughter of the Rev. Mr. Nicholson became the wife of Mr. Hill, who was for some time Collector of Customs at Dunediu. Miss vVestland became the wife of Mr. E. B. Atkinson, while her niece, Miss Margaret Westland, married Mr. Thos. Ferens.
Needless to say, time has wrought sad havoc with the pioneers, and a roll call would now be responded to by very few. A good many of those who came in the John Wickbffe as children are now men and women well advanced in years, and a goodly number of the children of that period have passed away.
