Mr James Mulvey. — At Gore, on Ihursday evening, 3rd iust., Mr James Mulvey, the popular draughts player, was presented by members of the Gore Draughts Club with a handsome table, the top of which contains a draughts board and two eribbage boirds, beautifully inlaid with hundreds oc pieces of Now Zealand woo^s. In making tho piesentation, Mr Domigan (president) said it was in recognition cf the many valuable services Mr Mulvey had rendered the club. A Novel Idea. — L. M. Steams, editor of tlieN.A.C.B , his bit upon a novel idea to promote and extend the most popular and scientific game, and, although h°. doesn't mention it, to advertise tbeN.A.O.B, He has printed a large number of slips headed " The North Amerirau Checker Board Circulation or Contribution Game." He then writes uown amove for Black on each slip, and starts it on its journey over the world by sending it to somi well-known player, who, after writing j down his reply to the last move, paases it on, and ! so on. Each player through whose hand the slip i passes is supposed to advise Mr Steams by letter or card of the face, stating the number of the game and his move. This enables the editor to keep trace of the game. One of these game 3 reached Mr D. A. Brodic, who sent it to ilr W« H Kay, Woodvilte ; another one, we learn from tbe Southern Standard, has jnst arrived in Gore, addressed to Mr J. Mulvey, =»fter pasting through the hands of the following persons :— L. M. I Steams, Derry Depot, U.S.A., December 8, 1897, who played 11 15; J. Bletcher, $16 Berg street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, replied with 23 19, on [ Jaruary 10, ISOt! ; and he passed it on to Tom. i Adam; 1 , 459 West street, Durban, Na'al, who ''■ played S 11, and passed it on to C. Gunthorpe, of the same cily, who pLiyert 22 17 ou January 15. J. Illiugworth, Richmond , New South Wale?, then played 15 18, f inning the "Ce-ntie," on February 21, and J. W. Teasdale, Hughenden, Townsville, Queensland, who was visiting Mr Illingworth at the time, plajed 19 15, and completed the exchange by 10 19, 24 8, 4 11. At this sage it reached J. Mulvey, who says it will doubtless be a considerable tinaebefoie the game is completed, as, after being three months on its journey, only nine moves have been made This game is numbered 148, po very likely the enterprising editor has issued a couple of hundred slips at the least. The thought of the number of cards and stamps the editor will receive will raake the amateur stamp collector's mouth water. Town v. Country. — We would again remind | country players of the forthcoming fixture and | the necessity of communicating with the secreI tary, Mr J. A Lucas, care of Mv F. Hilliker, I Princes street, Dunedin. No alteiation has been made of date or place. , Oamaru Tournament.— lv reply to the remarks ; of a correspondent in this column last week re non-payment of prize-winners at the late Oamaru 1 tourney, we are officially assured that every claim. ! has been settled, and that a balance sheet will be ! published.
