They left the post in a compact body, Donegal, Vingr*, and Vatersay leading past the stand, with Sprightly, Jack-o*-Lantern, Courallie, Lecnidas, and Tom next, Idolater whipping iv. Virago wa» almost immediately taken to the frout, and Sprightly lav close to her, with Donegal alongside him, Jack-o'-Lantern, Tom, and Cou'-allie next, Laouidaa with them, and Idolater last. They ran on to Ihe mile post without any appreciable alteration, but at the tree Leonidas moved ur> *. place and Donegal dropped back; Tom 7. as going fourth, Courallie fifth. At the six-furlong-post Leonidas had moved up second, and was half a length behind Virago, Sprightly losing ground every y^rd, a.id being practically bf a*,en betcre the fU'e-furloEg post. From the old stand Leonid.is drew even with Virago, and at the hilf mile was leading her, with Torn and C&urallie closing on her. At the threa- furlong post Leqnidas had a clear lead of his field, and was going well, and as ~thcy swung into the straight turn there was only one other horse looking at all dangerous, and that was Tom. Half way up the straight Tom made a desperate effort to get on terms, but it was fruitless, as Lconidas was full of running, and, going on, vvou without having ever been seriously challenged by thres :>nd aquarter lengths; three leng:hs between sec.-nd and third ; two aud a-hslf lengths between third and fourth. Time, 3vnin 7sec. On recurning to the paddock it was found that the favourite had a split hoof.
