THE SOUNDS EXCURSION
The Waikare returned to headquarters From her second excursion trip to the Sounds early on Monday morning, those on board having spent a most enjoyable time of it, marred only by an accident at Preservation Inlet, which, fortunately, was not so serious in its results as it might have beea. The accident occurred in hoiating out the launch. The ring of the hydraulic derrick bioke, the derrick fal!i> g right down on the deck. The captain was si.ruck on the back by s-ime o? tbe gear, and somewhat badly hurt ; and three passepgers were also slightly iujnred— C. A. Smith, H. Chancellor, D. U. O'Connor. The Wa.iks.re left Port Chalc&eca at 5 p.m. on Sunday, 30th ulf., and reacUed the BSuff early next morning. After taking on board additional passengers she headed for Preservation Inlet, where the anchored for the night. After the accident everything proved most enjoyable, and elcoosb continuous fine weather was experienced. After leaving Preservation Inlet she Tisited Dusky Sound and accbored in Wet J*ckefe Ar to, and a dance was held in ths evening. From he:e i-he proceeded to George Soutsd, wbere the regatta waa held. The winning crews were as follow :—: — Ladies' Race. — First boat— Misse3 Edwin (2), ITaether, and 33uncan ; second boat — Mi*3es M'Leaa (2), Macaseey, and Holmes. Officers v. PASsengera— Officers, 1. Sailors v. Firemen — Sailors, 1 JVs<engers H E.ace— Messrs Hixson, Peaue, Scott- Young, aad Hoggan, ]. Stewards v. Cooks — Stewards, 1. Consolation Race— Sailors, 1. The ezcursionists fimehed the day with a delightful ball on the saloon deck, with fireworks and a sumptuuuß banquet during the interval. The W»ik&ra arrived in Milford Sound at 8.30 on Friday moroiDg, 4-fch inst., and tho r^st of tbe day was ppent in exploring, fishing, &c. In the evening an eutert&inrnenfc was given by the passengers, and the distribution of prizes to the successful crews in the regatta races took place. Left Milford at 430 p.m. on Saturday. slh iuer., and reached the B.uff at 12.30 p.m. on Sunday, bringing one of the most suceetsfnl excursions tbat has ever been taken to the West Coaet Sounds to an end. There wera several good singers and pianists among the passengers, who were only too pleased to render Mr Jesse Timsou, who was in charge of the musical entertainments, any aeeistauce he r: quired. g' His excellency the Governor paid an offioial visit to Fort Chalmers yesterday. He officially visited Oamarn on Monday l»»t. The death is announced of Mr John Cargill, brother of Mr E. B. Cargill, mayor of Danedio, and son ef Captnia Cargill. Mr J. Cargill arrived by the Philip LaingJ'and was a naembar of the firet General Assembly of New Zealand, being one of tke representative! of the county district of Otiago.
