MILFORD SOUND,

February 1 —On January £9 black sm ke was Seen from the upper end of Lake Ada riiiog fiom Tutoko. The day was calm, fine, and clear, and cot a cloud was to be seen about the'hiils. Lately a number of e*ithquake shocks have been felt fit the head cf Milford, but some of these shoiks have not been felt up at Be-<ch Hut, a distance of only j5 miles.

New Track.— Going from the head of Milford up the north branch to the foot of Tutoko the fi > st three miles are open and leyel ground, the walking being easy. Further up it is the ordinary run of West Coast bush. A number of pai tif.s went up to the bead of this branch yeorj nX", anil °r.mp of them went up to the foot of Tutoko and back to Milford on a short winter day, but they did not cairy heavy swags like Malcolm Ross carries (1141b). Malcolm Ross calls this a hitheito unknown country, nesr Milord, but it was well known many years ago that tho Cleddau River bad three branches, and that the scenery was grand in all the branches. Up these branches no track* have been cut, and it is rather rough walking after the first three miles. A party wishing to go up any of them for a look lound'will have to carry a teiit and camp for a few days, which could be done by cany ing a light swag — about 401b— none of Malcolm Ross's 114!b swags : such a swag would burst up any of the old West Coasters.
