Notes from Wakatipu.
(Frosi Our Own Correspondent.) Arroavtown, February s.— Jnvercaigill, it Appears, is going " to rush " the Wakatipu. This is perhaps owing to the success Mr M'Farlane's company is meeting in their Arrow Falls tunnelliug claim. Although the actual get tings nf the company have not transpired, they are understood to be very good, with a promit-e of 1 isting for a good while to come. Mr W. Taylor h^-s now definitely taken up the Arrow Flat for an Invor•airgill syndicate, and if gone about ths light way , the undertaking, ought to be made to p n y good re- ] turns. The Gallant 'J ipperary, near Skippers, is ' also about to pis'* iu'o the hands of an Invercai 1 - j gill company. The conditions of failure or success in this mine are so palpable that the uew | compauy will be to blame it they make a_ mistake j Ibetwaeu the two alternatives. The mine in known I to contain a large body of quartz of medium a;rade, ! which will require a wholesale way of working to I turn to asc-rtiit, backed by a large and powerful ! battery. If the new company fail to procure these I nenessaries they will be simply struggling, as did i the old company, against difficulties that will j ultimately smother them, while with such aids success is almost certain. At the Achilles mine many and great d-fnculties ara met with in getting the new development vro.ks in going order. However, things are p-o- I gressing as well as can be expected under the | existing difficulties obstructing the transit of j heavy machinery along the iropeifect roads andao j forth. At Macetown quartz-miaing is locking up. Ihe la^t crushing from the Glenrock stone yielded 371i0z of bar bullion from 410 tons crushed— a return that enabled the manager (Mr Stanford) to remit to London a sum available for dividends over aud above all working expenses for the month of January last, and as this has been the rule for several months pa^t the mine may be said to be in A dividend-pa> ing condition. The Westralia and New Zealand Gold Explorers obtained 19Joz from 80 tons crushed. Thiti, however, was taken chiefly from prospecting drives. Sluicing operations in nearly every part of the district are in a healthy state and a good few even in a flourishing condition, several bearing witness to the great richness of the alluvial deposits of the Wakatipu. Rumour hath it that good gold has been struck in the Victor Emanuel mine, Macetown, aad staps are being taken, it is said, to open the discovery. In order to teat the value of the stone the battery of four heiids of stampers on the ground is going to ba put into thorough repair and a quantity of stone submitted to practical test.
