Worked like a Charm.
A gentleman who had often been a ■victim to the rolling of the vessel when on a eea jcurney believed that ho had found a way to avoid it by going to bed as soon as he came on beard, and remaining there until he came to his destination. The next fcrmebe had to make a journey by sea he lest no time in climbing into his berth, and in a few minutes was fast asleep, and slept like a top until the nexfc morning. He arose delighted, satisfied that he had at last found a remedy which would save him mnch misery. Going on deck wi'h a satisfied look on his face, ho met the captain. He at once exclaimed : " That sleeping of mice worked like a charm —I never had a. moment's uneasiness all night." The captain smiled. •'What are you laughing for?" he aaktd,
in surprise. "Because," was the captain's reply, "the
ship has been in dock all night. She has nofc moved a foot. There was something the matter with her engines, and we were obliged to transfer the passengers to another steamer. No one suspected that a mau would go to bed at 6 o'clock, and accordingly you were overlooked in fche transfer." The gentleman left the ship sadder and wiser.
