THE LABOUR MARKET.

Mr Skenis reports under date January 11 : — Now the holidays are well over all are anxious for work, and a goodly number aie " whipping the cat." The wool hurry is wearing through, and harvest will soon be all the go. Cheques won't be bis thw time Meantime there is a large demand for turnip lioers. Experienced farm men are moving, but our greatest trouble is to supply the heavy demand for milkers. Couples, cooks, grooms, and qcld hands for country hotels are always wanted} and wageb seem satisfactory.

A good many harveitingf machines are now at work (sayii the Timaru Hera'd) on the earlier crops of oats, and this wt-ek, if the flue weather lasts, fche reapers will be ratlling in all directions. The'oats are cubtiag out very lighb, but, so far as we can learn, the wheat in thd Kerrytown, Seadown, Milford, Waitfh', Temuka, Winchester, Eangitata, and Upper Orari districts ih good, some of the crops 'being very good. It is nearly all short iv the straw, but well headed and likely to thresh oat well.

A Foxlon storekeeper was the other day importuned for food by one cf the genus loafer. He promised to comply with the request if the man would cut pome firewood. When the work was done (says the Manawala paper) cash was demanded, and all tho pains and penalties of the Truck Acl threatened if tho demand was nob complied with. Sooner than haw any bother, 5s was paid for the lesson.
