At the New, Zealand Chess Championship in the ninth round Edwards won from H. H Smith (Glenvar), Barnes won from Lelievre, Pleasanta won from Grierson, L P. Smith (Glenvar) won from Mellor, Howe won from Jamfs, Wcod won from F. Smith (Waimea). Tha scores at the close of the niuth round were: Barnes — 9 win«, no losee*; Howe — 6£ wins, 1£ losses ; L, P. Smith— 6^ wins, 2| losses ; James— 6 wins and 3 losses, ; Wood, Edwards, and Mcllor — each 5£ wins and 3£ losses ; Pleasants — 3jy wins and 4J losses ; Leh<ivre~3 wins and 5 losses ; II H Smith and Griereon — each 2^ wins and 6£ losses ; Jowitb (retired) — 2 wins and 10 losses; F. Smith — 1 win and 8 losses. At the annual meetiug the accounts showed a credit of £26 It was decided to stop consultations on finished gam's while nnßn : shed games are in progress. The nexb congress wa* fixed for Duaedia on December 26 1898 Sir Robert Stout was elected president, Mr Milner (Christchurch) secretary and treasurer. January 5. At the New Zealaud Chess Championship CDngress to-day, in the tenth round, Lelitvre won from Jam-s (Kmg'd gainbib declined); Pless-nts opened with the Ruy Lopez against W^od, aDd won; Griergin, with tbe Sicilian defence, won from F. Smith ; and Barnes played Howe, who adopted Petn-ffs defence, leading to a closely-contested game not yet finished.
January 7. In the twelfth round for the New Ztstand chess championship Barnes won fjoua Wood, 3Jle3Bauts3 J le3Bauts won from L^licvr-', Jasnes won from H. H. Barnes and Huvre resumed their adjour ed game, wh : ch resulted in a draw. Barnes has now completed his score, with 10£ wiiis .snd 1£ losses. He is therefore champion again. January 8. Tbe detailed results of the chess tournament are as follow :—
Mr B*rur-s heids the championship for the third time. Mr H. Ho(.kb*m gained the honour some time prior to 1883 ; in 1889 Mr A M. OHivifr won it; and thcii, in the ord^r named, the cbrmpians have been — Mr H Hcokh-Hio. Mr R J B^rrse.', Mr F. Siedeberg (1892 and 1893), Mr J. Edward*, Mr W. Mr.ckaj, M*- W. Meld- uui, and Mr Barnes ; th? latter gasnhig the distinction last year, and being sueeess-ful k> defending ife.
