VITAL STATISTICS.
The vital statistics for the Duaedin district; for the year 1897 were as follow : —
The totals for 1896 were : — Births, 1183 ; deaths, 529 ; marriages, 412.
The British Post Office makes £4000 a year by unclaimed money orders. Builders say that walls built during a rainy season are the strongest, and that when mortar dries quickly it becomes crumbly, and possesses little binding power. General William Anson M'Cleverty. a sou of Major-gener.il Sir Robert M'Cleferty, C.8., died on October 22 at Wrotham, in Kt nt, ia his ninety-second year. He joined the 48th. Northamptonshire R-giinenl. in 1824, and twice in India saw splendid service. It was, however, as Conamander of the Forces in New Zealand, during the Maori war, that he rendered conspicuous services to his Queen and country. The Wellington Land Board hare approved of the subdivision and prices of an estate of 300 acres purchased by the Government under the Lands for Settlement Act for the purposes of establishing workman's homes at Johnson ville. It was stated that there had been many inquiries for tha laod, and that as the prices would be about £9 to £10 per acre, a workman would find it cheaper to purchase a house and land in the estate than to rent a house in Wellington. Some 50 man were now working on the estate. The rangers' reports upon the Tillage settlements in the Makuri Block were of a most encouraging nature, '
