Ihe result of the play as recorded by telegram from day to day appears below, Ifc will be seen that there are 13 competitors. Mr Mtldrum's name does not appear although he was entered, and his place .appeal s to be taken by Mr Howe, who is new to New Zealand chess touvney3. The names of the Otago representatives do not appear in the first day's record, the explanation of which is that as according to the established nils repieaeutatives from, the same club must play together on the first day, Messrs Edwards aud Mellor played on thut day and did not finish the game, which, is therefore not reported. Mr Barue?, the present champion, lias taken the lead, and is not unlikely to retain the position.

The Chsss Cungiess opened yesterday. Barnes (Weliiugton) defeated James (Wellington), Jowilb (Auckland) beat Ls Li-vre (Auckland), H. F. Smith drew with L P. Sinifh (bath of Auckland), Grierson (Auckland) drew with Wood (Auckland), Pieasaots (Ringitikei) defeated F. H. Smith (Waimea); Howe had a bye. To-day Hows dtfe»ted Le Lievre, Barnes defeated E'lw&rds, Piessants defeated Jowifct ; James had a bye.

The Chess CoDgress was continued to-day. The third rcuad was" concluded (his morning. Giierson and Le Lievre drew, as did Smith and H. N. Jowitt. L P. Sa>kh defeated Howe, Wood defeated Mellor, Edwards defeated F. Saaith, James defeated Pleasaiits. Barnes received a bye. In the fourth round Woods v. Jowitfe and Grierson v. Horoe were drawn £ame3. Le Lievre won from F. Smith (W.iiraea), Barnes from IT. H. Smith (Glenvar), Jumes from L. T. Smith (Glenvar), and Plcasanis drew with Mellor.

At the New Zealand Chess Championship Congress to-day, in the fifth round, Peasants drew with Mellor, L. P. Smith (Glenvark) won from Jowett, La Lievre drew with H. H. Smith (Glenvark), Edwards won from Griereon, Ba r ne3 won from JJ. Smith (Waim<;?i), fil«-llor won from James. IVlellor defeated Edwards in the adjourned game, and Howe won from Wood.

Afc the New Zealand Cbess Congress to-day in the sixth round Barnes beat Mellor on the twenty-ninth move, Wood beat H. H. Smith, Howe beat Jowitt, Edwards beat Pleasants, James beat Grierson, Lelievre beat J. Smith (penalty), F. Smith a bye. Is is to be regretted Mr Jawitfc has had to retira fi-oaa the contsst, as he bas had to takn up the du<ie3 cf a fellow employee, owing to the lalter's ilines3.

In the seventh round Barnes defeated Peasants, Howe defeated H. H. Smith, Wood defrftted Lelievre, L. P. Ssaith drew with Edwards, and Jowilt retired, all hie uoplsyed games going to hie opponents.
At to-daj's proceedings in the eighth rouad Howe won from Edward*, James won from Wood, L. P. Smith (Glenvar) won from Pleasants, Mellor won from H. 11. Smith (Grk-nvar), and Barne3 won from Grierson.
The leading scores now stand, B irnes 8 wins ; Mklior. 5 \rlap, 2 leses, 1 drawn ; Edward's, 4wins, 3 loses, 1 drawn ; and several otherabouiT the &ama. Three games each still to bs played.
