SCHOOL VACATIONS.

THE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL.

The annual distribution of prizes to the children of the Industrial School took place on Thursday afternooD, in the presence of Messrs P. Miller and A. Solomon (representing the Board of Advico), the Rev. C. S. Bowdon, and a number of ladies interested in the institution. Mr Miller, who presided, mentioned that Dr Hielop, who had been connected with the institution since its inception, was unfortunately prevented from attending. The Board of Advice were very pleased to find that the result of the year's work in the school had been eminently satisfactory, reflecting credit on the day school staff (Mr Burn and Miss Christie), and that the general tone of the institution left nothing to be desired. In respect to the latter, the thauks of the cammunity were due to Mr and Mrs Burlinsoa. Mr Miller then proceeded to distribute the priz-iB. After some singing the children were addressed in a happy vein by Mr Solomon, who said that he had made arrangements with the Union Company for an outing down the bay, of which due notice will be given. HIGHCLIFF. The Highcliff School broke up for the holidays on the 22nd, when a very successful concert was held, the hall being crowded to excess. The items consisted of songs, recitatious, and dialogues, which were successfully rendered by the^pupils ; also violin solos by Miss A. Duckworth and Mr T. Duckworth. Refreshments (provided by the ladies of the district) were handed round, and after justice had been done to the good things the committee presented each pupil attending the school with a book. The Rev. A. Greig spoke a few words of encouragement to the teachers and pupils on their work. A vote of thanks was proposed by Mr Stuart to the ladies for providing the cakes, and a similar vote was caised to the com-

mittee, after which the hall was oleared For dancing', which was kept ud with good spirit till an early hour. " -
