A WHEAT CORNER. Chicago, December 23.
A speculator is trying to establish a corner in wheat. He has bought Bto 10 million tfushelf>, and prices in the Chicago market are now at their highest sinca 1891, bat other American markets are not affected.
The weekly returns of the Bank of England show the total reserve to be £20,0%*,000, and the proportion of reserve to liabilities 4T97. Thiee months' bills are discounted at 3 per cent. Console, 112 J. Quotations for colonial stocks :—: —
The English wheat n^arket is firm,' but little business is doing ; while the Continental is chaugiog a little for the better and the American is inclined to buoyancy. Californian No. 1 milling, 37s G<\ ; Russian cargoes, 37s ; London quotations hard Duluth, 40s. Colonial oats : Fine, 26s 6J ; common, 23a 6d. Beans, 32s 6d ; Victorian rlun peas, 2Gs. Sugar, iirm. Java, lls ; German beet, 9s 4Jd. No: 1 btst Scotch pig iron (f.o.b. in the Clyde), 453 fid. The Bradford wool market is improving. , Silver, 2s 2|d per oz. B-itter is unchanged, owing to the holidays. Rabbits are dull of sale ; prices unchanged. Hares flat at 2s Gd. New Zealand hemp is steady, and is quoted at £I'l 10s per ton. December 20. Mutton. — Crossbred wethers and maiden ewes : Canterbury, 3{J 1 perlb; Dunedin and Southland, j 215161; North Island, 2Jd. Lamb is not quoted. River PUte crossbreds and merino wethers, heavy and light, 2£d.
