Calcutta, December 20. Brigadier-general Hammond found tho Khyber Pass deserted by the tribesmen. The Orakziis have paid tho fines de« manded from them by General Lackhart in the terms ,of peace. The3e terms included the surrender of 300 breach-loaders, tho restoration of the looted arms and property, also the payment of a fine of 35,000 rupees, and the forfeiture of Government subsidies. December 23. Indian newspapers severely criticise the manner of conducting the frontier campaign, and assert that the rearguard has been sacrificed. The column under the command of Briga-dier-general Hammond is detailed to rebuild the forts of AH Mustgin, Maude, and Lundf Khotal, in the Khjber Pass, which werr destroyed By the tribesmen. Brigadier-general Biggs, who took a prominent part in the frontier campaign, hat been invalided. ' December 24. f The Bonerwal tribesmen on the Indian frontier have been allowed a week to submit to the British authorities, and have been ordered to pay a fine of 11,000 rupees. December 27. General Lockhart, operating in th« Bazaar Valley, has destroyed the defence* at Alachi.
