— A Paris inventor believes that he can calm the ocean waves round a vessel by spreading over them a thin cotton or silk net, made unsubmergtble by being dipped in a certain chemical solution. — The quantity of driftwood cast upon the Arctic shores is enormous. Many raised baaohes are strewn with pine and larch logs, to which the roots are often attached and are buried in the mud. Mosses and sedges, willows and saxifruges grow upon the beach ; their remains, together with wind-borne material, may gradually fill up the spaces between the tree trunks, and the whole may be buried by rainwash from the hills. '
