A police official came into possession of ft letter directed to a certain pro'essor at Vladimir which contained th's mysterious phrase : "The reiga of the cucumber has commenced with us." This struck him as highly suspicious. What was meant by " the reign of the cucumber " ? A plot agaiuat the S ate might be brewing. He immediately sent policeman to take the professor into custody and bring him to St. Petersburg; end tLe feelings of the professor durin* the journey may be readily imagined. On his arrival ab the city be wai clostly guarded, and for a whole forlnighb r^miined withoub seeing a ton), wandering what he had done and wfcab would become of him. When at laafc be was interrogated as to the meaning of tho mysterious pbraße he replied that is was tbe custom of tbe ttudents ab Moscow to feed on raw cucumbers while preparing for tho examination. And on inquiry, this .having turned out to bs the cage, he was sant bick to VJadimir to resume his scholastic duties and eat cucumbers.
