A FIRE AND A FATAL ACCIDENT. Auckland,, December 23.
By a fife at Kiugslaud this afternoon five houses were desbroyed. There w*s no wale? and no fire brigade. The fire indirectly led to a fatal accident a% Kingsland crossing, Katpura railway. Mr and Mrs Frederick Batblcy wore driving home to Mouub Albert from 'Auckland. Tbe horse in the buggy would not pass the burning biildinjn, bo they turned dotm to the Kingsland railway crossing to get into the Cabbage Tree Ssvamp road, near the crossing, which is dangerous owing to a point of land shutting out the view of the line. A special goods train came along, and the horse, already excited by the fire, dashsd towards the train. The advancing carriage* gtruck the hind wheel of the bug?y, aud Mrs Battley war thrown under the wheel, being dragged 60fb aud killed. Mr Bafctley received contusions on tha head by passing waggons, bub none are dangerous. The driver jumped down to hold tha horse's hsad, bub ib was unmanageable, and ha was thrown under the buggy and injured, though not dangerously. Mr Btttley is exmanager of the Loan and Mercantile,Company c The deceased lady leaves a grown-up family.
