THE INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.
The General Committee appointed to carry out details ioiconnection with the forthcoming Industrial 'Exhibition are determined to leave no stone unturned to make the project worthy of ths auspicious occasion. They wish to show 'the'wondtrful, progress made in all branches of manufacture?, and foster and encurage tbe ihdufttrie? and .productions of New Zealand. Communications have been sent to the.Government pom ting out the 'objest of the exhibition and asking for "their support in this matter. Chculars<have>been freely circulated among all the classes of 'the 'Community,, aud we *re ,pleased',to'.be able bo .report thab-tb.^ project has bsen encouragingly received in .all quarters ; a 'large sum has already Tit on promised in subscriptions, guarantees have been received lor such an amount that will enable the promoters to Immediately .make arrangements .for .proceeding with the ereocion'Of an additional building required. It has been decided to appoint sub-committees to rake 'charge of all tho different sections, and at Friday's meeting Dr 'Hot-ken -was rfbminated as chairman of the historical court, Mr "G M. Thomson as ireprcsantative of 'the fisliovi'js and .the acclimatisation c-jurfc, and ib is expected that Jin tha caurse -.of aifew<da.ys the whole of the committees will bo 'appointed, aud a, prospectus issued giving full details.
His Honor Mr Juabiee Williams wrote advising that he would be pleased to -accept the position of hon. vice-president. Several applications for Ilia use of the building'du'ing Jubilee week wera reoeived, and it was decided* to defrr consideration until the Geueral Committee had arranged a programme for that week, when the whole of the applications would be favourably considered, and, if ■possible, arranged iu.coujanction with the commit tee .programme. It has .not been definitely decided how long the exhibition will ba open, but at present it is proposed to olosa it with the Otago A. and P. Society's Winter show about the end of May. As it is intended to reserve tha main hall for ■entertainment, that; portion of ths building be utilised during show week for exhibits of cheese, . gcaiu, &•., leaving the rest of the exhibition intact.
The execabive moeb every morning at 11 o'clock, when they wilLbe pleased to meet any person who may wish- to discuss matters iv connection with the exhibition.
A meeting of ths General Cornmibfeee of tho Otago Jubilee Industrial Exhibition was held in the Agricultural Hall board room on tho 14th ; the Hon. Thomas Fergus iv tho chair.
A com-idjeiv.ble amount of correspondence in 'connection wi h theexhibitiou was disposed of, including a letter from A G. Kingston iHunter offering hia services in an honorary capacity as ' director of, techrjFjal exhibits, and suggesting that a portion oF tho 'building be specially set •apart for this ..purpose, which was referred 1 to "the Space Comijaitlee for> .their favourable consideration.
Mr J. H. Morrison proposed Mean's T. Brydone, T. Fergus, and H>zlett ; as vice-presidents, mud also to act as 'the executive. — Seconded by Mr P» R. Sahqoob and carried uuanimously.
Messrs Janaeg Smith, R. C. Jones, and A. Fieldwick were appointed a Lighting Committee. (,
It was decided to aek Messrs Thomas Brown and J. M. Ritchie to consult and suggest a suitable committee to take charge of the art gallery. Messes Bilhgate and Woodhouse were proposed. A3 honorary solicitors, and the secretary was instructed to communicate with them and ascertain if they were agreeable. The National Bank of -New Zealand (Limited) were appointed bankers. Several other matters were allowed to stand over until a plan of the proposed building was 'procured. Mr J. H. Morriton, general manager of the Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company, offered a donation uf £10 to the exhibition funds. The secretary was instructed .to acknowledge same with thanks.
It was reported that guarantees and subscriptions are coming in freely, , and that the success of the exhibition is practically assured.
After the meeting was over a letter was received from the executive of the Dunedin Retailers' Association commending the exhibition to the support of their members.
THE DEMONSTRATION COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the O'.ago Jubilee Demonstration Sub-committes, held on Friday at the office of -Mr D. .Harris Hustings, was attended by H. Gourley (in the chair), ;R. Chisholm, A. C. B-gg, J. M'ladoe, W. Swan, J. A. Park, A Lee Smith. G. C. Lira el. W. Reid, C. Fisher, J. White, aud Mi 1 D. Hwii3 A,pologks were received from Messrs G. L. Denniston and S. S Myers.
The Rev. E. R : chards, secretary of the Dunedin 'Ministers' Association, wrote that at ,a meeting hetcl on Monday, representing "the Presbyterians, Methodists, Baptists, and Congcegationalist', it was decided to Forward the iollowing information :—": — " That th^y .have .arranged =to hold, in addition to the historical service at Fa-it Church, services at Knox Church and Trinity Wesleyan Church on the morning of March' 23, from 10 o'clock till 11 30-; also to strongly urgetbat up to 12 noon on-that day be left free for the aaid services. A compliance with this weTeil sure will meet the wishes of all the religious badies in-the city and suburbs, and at the same time leave ample time for other festivities, and also give the public thanksgiving to Gad the space and place it is dua in the Jubiles celebrations." — Recaived.
The Re*. W. Will, moderator of the Presbyterian Synod, wrote intimating that the Rev. W. Hewitson (Knox Church) and the Rev. Jaraos Gibb (First Church) had bean appointed to represent the 'Presbyterian Church in the Jubilee arrangements. — Received. Mr William Swan, Mosgiel, wrote intimating that tbe Borough Council -of Mosgiel had appointed the -mayor (Mr A. Barron) and Cr Swan as delegate?. — Received.
The .Secretary of the Dunedin Retailers' Association wrote intimating that 'the association was of -opinion that the 23rd March was the besi day -for 'the illuminations, and thattihe members of the association were prepared to light up .that night. — Received.
Mr E. A.Cogan, one of the joint secretaries of the .Jubilee Industrial Exhibition, wrote, stating 'that a letter from the sub-committee ' would >be brought up at the next meeting of the ' executive — in -a few days — Received.
The following programme was adopted, and ' it was decided to submit it to a meeting of the ' committee to 'he held on Tuesday :— Your committechaye held three meetings, and
have gone very carefully into ithe*»hole of the .matters remitted to them. Owing to the pro« motion of another scheme for celebrating the Jubilee they 'have 'been considerably hampered in carrying out their ideas, .ana -are also likely to be ''hampered financially, From the fact' that ta .many outside bodies have made their 'owit ..arrangements, it Iras baen found impossible to draw up a 'programme -for .the -week. 'They therefore recommend that up toll a.m. on the morning of 23rd March, 1898, 'be'lefo free'for religious services. , At 11.30 a.m. a ,proaasaiou forms in tha Triangle, proceeds along Cumberland, Si. Andrew, .and George streets .to -a site to be approved of by the City •Counoilrfqr'tree-plantins'. Thence to the -'QaledOnian grounTds, where there will be luncheon, speeches, and singing, finishing up with " Auld lang syne." In the evening a conversazione will be held ia a suitable hall, and speeches will be given. There will also be a fireworks display and general illuminations. It is proposed to set -up the following -committees-:—^Executive and "Finance, Troceesion, -Conversazione, tPrintiog And Advertising, Fii-ewotks, . and Jllumination. It 'is . proposed to hold a citizens' .ball on the evening oE the 24th March, 1898, for -which a 'special committee Will be Bet up. 3t .is .further Mcommendcd to secure. a laige hall for all day Wednesday, 23rd - March, so that in case of .inclement weather cither arrangements can 'be made.
