Country Sales. — TMacltjan and Co. report Laving h>Li t'neir usual fortnightly tale at Balqlutha oa ITiiday. Entries were small, but competition was fairly good f r any nice Hues. Of cour.Ee sheatiop op: rations affect the attendance at this time of yeir, and, gcneially speiking, business is a little dull. Wo sold bulloiks to £l Is. cows uud heifers to m Via.

Wool. — The weather ha 3 somewhat improved lat ly ; in consequence more progress is being mndo with shearing, and consignments are coming to linnd more freely, so that the catalogues to bo presented on the 21st inst. will be more fully representative than, was but lately expected. A. large number of bjiyera, both Home and Continental, have intimated their desire to be present, aud if^seUera' reserves are not too high good business will doubtless eventuate. The following is from the .SvdnevWool arid Produce Journal of November 27 :— " The- bystsm of imposing high reserves, or even requiring' hard and fast vajua*tion*, is invariably inimical to the interests b£ owners, even if the latter -merely iusist on the ' viiluation.matte perhaps a fortnight earliet b*in£ realised, which, by the way, is merely arrived at by pickin; a bit off evory here aad llui-ti from the ' bales at random, and on thii insufficient baais a valuation is forwarded, because it I*3 insisted on, by the owner. This is a mi-stake, far the valuation may be too high, or the market may Blicjhtly decline, and the auctioneer will inevitably hesitate to dispose of the wool a fraction cheaper than liis valuati n, even, if he to some extent have the sanction of the owner. He passe 3 the lot io, calls out the next, and the opportunity of selling the wool to advantage ij almost to a cevtainty entirely lost" The sales this season will be UcH in the Agricultural Hall in the following order :— First, t.ho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency (Limited); second, Farmers* Agency Company (Limited); third, Maclean ami Go. ; foutth, Moritzion and Hopkin; fifth. Donald lleid and Co. ; sixth, Dalgety and Co. ; seventh, Stronach Bio^. and Morris.

Kheopski'l3. — Competition, at the auction sale?, though not quite so keen aa was experienced up till lately, is nevertheless fairly satisfactory, and very little change to note in price* Beat dry crosHbrect skins arc fetching is 3d to 5s 6d; medium to good, 2a 3d to 3s 3d ; iuferior, Is 3d to 2i 2-1 ; bare pelts, 2d to Is Id ; beat morinoa (dry>, 3s9dto4a9d; medium, 2*61 to 3*31 ; inferior. Is 4d to 2-j 4J ; pelts, Id to 9d ; green crossbred skins-best ii 3d to 5s 3d, extra hea-vy a shade more ; medium, 3s 6d to 4s ; green lambskins, 9d to Is 3d each. •Rabbiti-kins. — The season is drawing to a close. Catalogues nosy presented are small i»nd mostly indifferent qmlifcy. A good demand continues to exist, and all offering are keenly competed for. Prim© winter grey (mixed) are worth. Is ljd to Is 2Jd ; selected does. Is 2Jd to Is 3|d : medium, lOd to Is Id ; manner, and off-season, 3Jd to BJd ; suckers and infeiior. Id to 2A.1 per Ib. Hides meefc a ready sale. .Extra heavy, 7ilb to 1001b, fetch 33 d to 4d ; 61115 to 701b, 3d to 3R; 561b to COlb, 2fd ; 4oib to SSIK 2^l ; 381b to 451b, 2}d ; 301b to 38lb, 2d ; inferior, Id to HA per Ib. , Tallow and Fat.— Maikct quiet; sales iilmcat confined to the odd lots coming to hand from the country. Best country rendered fetches 13s 6d to 355; medium. 10a 61 to 13s. Rousb. fat: Best mutton caul, 9t 6d to 10s ; medium, 8* 9d to 9s 3d ; inferior, Ss to 8s 6rt per cwt (ex store, net). Grain.— Wheat: The slight demand existing is confined to extra prime velvet for milling, and a little inquiry for fowls' wheat. Medium quality is unsaleable except at fowls' wheat price. Quotations for prime northern velvet, 4s fd to 4s 8d ; best red wheat and Tuscan, 4s 2d to 4s SJ ; medium (nominally), 3s 9d to 4s 2d ; inferior, 3s to 3s CJd (tx store, sacks weighed in, terms). Oats : 'i he market is very firm, not so much perhaps owing to the demand which is fairly brisk, but rather to the unsatisfactory report* of the condition of I£^ growing crops both north, and south. Sales are daily effected, though sellers are holding for higher prices, which may be secured later on, nevertheless doubtful. Meantime we quote : Prime •milling, Is lid to 2s ; prime stout short feed, Is lOd to Is lOJd ; medium to good, Is BJ<i to Is 9£d ; inferior, Is 4d to Is GJdXex store, sacks extra, net). Barley : There are no stocks now to operate on— only odd lots of inferior, which readily sell at 2s 9d to 3s (ex store, sacks extra, net). Grass — There is ,some inquiry for ryegrass seed, but prices offered iv many instances do not lead to much business. Quotations for best dressed. 3j 8d to 3s 9d ; extra do, 4s to 4a 6d ; large, coarse seed, 2* to 2s fid (ex store, sacks extra, net). Cocksfoot (in retail lots), medium to best-dressed 1 , fetches 4d to 5Jd per bushel. Chaff.— The supply being sufficient for require, ments, prices are unchanged ; best fetching £3 5s to £3 10s ; extra prime, £3 to £3 6s ; medium t» good, £3 10s to £3 per ton (ex truck, «acks extra, net).
