TO THE ELDER TREE.

Oh, elder tree, spread out thy show Of foliage, bright in liviog green, With clustering flowers of purest snow, And deck thy crown in glittering sheen. Aspiring plant, lift high thy. boughs, ' To sunshine and the cooling breeze, And while propitious fate allows Assert tby zeal the eye to please. Expand thy clusters overhead, rianciDg and sp.wkling in the light ; That zeal and glory may be fed While grace and beauty give delight. Grow high, spread wide, slack not thy zeal, Teach lessons to less zealous man, Till energy and life shall seal Success as pledge to vigour's plan. Dunedin, December 9. % —11. N. Adams.
