The first annual report of the Southern StarrBowkett Society states that the first year's operations have proved highly satisfactory and profitable. The profit and loss account shows a net profit of £73 93 9d, and if to this there be added the full amount of the premiums secured on sales, the transactions for 1897 would show a total profit of over 103 per share. The directors, however, have not considered themselves justified in taking to credit in the actual balance sheet premiums not due, but only the amount collected to date. In the course of the year the society made four appropriations — two by ballot and two by sale, . the latter realising premiums totallipg £MS. <
