Auckland, September 23.

To-night Charles Hoodless, a single man, about 25 years old, a carrier, arrived at his lodgings at Hill Bros., Owen road,v Mount Eden, appareutly mad with drink. He beat his horse badly, and then gob his qua and cleared the whole household oub. He fired at Thomas Hill with a charge of powder, and afterwards at Migs Tempie Hill with a. charge of No. 5 shot. Charlotte Hill, aged 12, locked herself in a room, and was got oub with,difisculfcy by Thomas Hill through a window. Constable Hackle, of Newmarket, came, and with help secured Hoodless in the house, and with the aid of Constable BToffett handcuffed his hands behind hia back and strapped his leg*. He was thus brought in a trap to the Auckland lock-up, where he was charged with shooting at Miss Tempie Hill with intenb to do grievous bodily harm. Hoodless has been two years in the colony. He came from Lincolnshire, and ie alleged to 'be violent and dangerous when under the influence of liquor. He had been sober for three months, but got drunk through vexation over a business transaction.

September 21.

When charged at the Police Court to-day with shooting Miss Tempie Hill, Hoodless said ♦•I doa't know anything about ib." He was remanded till Thursday,
