A FRENCH REVERSE.
Paris, September 20.
News has been received from the Western Soudan that the forces under Samary, the well-known Mohammedan chief, have engaged and dispersed a French native detachment operating at Lobi. Two' officers and six riflemen attached to the French party were killed, while 38 are reported as missing.
September 23. The object of the French detachment which was attacked by Samory's force* while proceeding' to Lobi was to require the evacuation of the place by the natives. The disaster was brought about by gros» treachery on the part of Samory himself.
Mr F. N. Meadows, who was secretary of the New Zealand court, says the Brisbane Exhibition waa not a financial succes?, only 320,000 visitors paying. He found that the bulk of the agricultural machinery was of New Zealand make, and more adapted to the work that the English or American. In every clasa the New Zealand exhibitors came out on top of the prize libt.
