September 27.
The concluding day of the Avond»le Jockey Club's Spring meeting gave us a- fair insight into the capabilities of Mr L. D. Nathan's Cuirassier— j Roie filly Miss Emmy, who claims some important three-year-old engagements this season, the Hawke's Bay Guineas amongst others. She vrifi j made a red-hot favourite for the leading race of the day-4;he Plumpton Handicap, of 75sov«<, seven furlongs — whiph attracted half a dozen starters, the best of whom outiide of Miss Emmy were Panoply 8.6, Porangi Potae 8.0, and Pyroxylin 7.8 The support accorded to Miss. Emmy proved correct, the mare getting home by a couple of lengths from Porangi Potae, . after whom came Pyroxylin ; but on the whole the display given by the winner was disappointing, for she had to be shaken up and ridden fairly hard in the straight to stave off Porangi ' Potne. The seven furlong* took Imin 35* ec, and from her performance Jsl'm Emmy is, I am afraid, not quite the clipper we credited -her with being She is a fine big mare— rather too big, in fsct— and may prove a greater success at the stud than on the track.
A slippery two year-old was unearthed in the Nurgery Handicap, of 40sovs. four furlongs, in the shape of St. Innis, a youngster by St. Leger from Inniisfwil. The bulk of the money went on Blue Jacket and Kettledrum, but a big break by St. Innis at the start gave her an advantage that beat the others "pointless, although Blue Jacket galloped like a game 'un and showed creditable pace in netting-second. Kettledrum was third. A Blairgowrie two-year-old from Pandora named Punacea was backed heavily in this ra.ee on the strength of a smart trial, but she showed poor form.
The Electric Handicap, of 50?ov«, four furlongs, was a soft snip for Atlanta, who, favoured with a good start, beat the crowd badly. The Nelson mare Seabreeze ran a fair second after getting all the worst of the start, and Porangi Potse was third.
Reflection (Flintlock— r-unrise) had too much pace for her opponents in the Hunt Club Hurdles, winning easily from Flukem and Molly Hawk; and Pororua won the Pony. Handicap from end to end, the other places being filled by Fidget and Archduke. The latter was an odds on favourite, but could not struggle with the 9.7 with which he ..was loaded. A promising hurdler was disclosed in the Maiden Hurdlec, the Sou-wester gelding Nor"west winning anyhow. This fellow will figure to advantage in big events this season. The Steeplechase was a farce. Three started— Mozel, Forell», and Salute. The nrat-named won in a c*nter from Forelln, who had four attempts at negotiating the last hurdle before he got over it, by which time the winning jockey was weighing in. Salute turned a somersault at the second obstacle. _ , . , During the pa»t week Monte Carlo received further support for the New Zealand Cup. until the commission reached £2000?- The money was secured at hundreds to one. A couple of hundred was taken about St. Paul at 100 to 7i, and the little St. Legcr colt is now very firm at 100 to 8. Waiuku is at the same price, and Euroclydon at 100 to 10
