Aooounte for the month amounting to £1240s 9d were passed for payment.

INSPBCTOH's BEPOIiT.

The Inspector reported as under :—: —

Dunbeck Riding. — I went up with Mr W. Murray, sen., and examined the present road line oa the P*lmerston Borough Endowment, which is very steep *nd rocky. If a deviation wens m«d« I think a better track could be got than the surveyed liae, but *s the mountain is Tery »teep anything like a good wheel traffic road woald never be praotioable.— Tfae report was received, and tbe council decided, on the motion of ' Or Kekkbdt, seconded by Cc Habtstonqb, to make an application to Mr A.D. Bell to ascertain if he would grant a deviation to give,*etee« to the borough endowment. Gr&en Valley Riding.— l examined the road wbkh Mr D. Muir complained about, and as it is very steep a deviation is the only improve-" ni*nfc I could make'to it ; but as the property is private, the owner would h«ve to be teen. — The report was received, and the council resolved, on the motion of Cr Matheson, seconded by Cr Hartstonge, to m»ke application to Mr Wchh, the owner of the land referred to, re the tetms he would bs disposed to grant a deviation on.

Blue Mountain Riding.— As the crossing at Kendall's, I«ch Valley, was too bad to repair, I got some blue gum post* split by the surfacemen, und, with tho consent of the chairman and the owner of the land, the fence has since been erected.* — The «ietiou of the inspector and the chairman was approved.

COR* ES PONDTSKCE .

The Secretary of the Treasury, Wellington, wrote intimating that the following amonnts had bef n remitted to the credit of the council at the B*uk of New Zealand, Palmerston — viz : GoWficlds- revenue. £6 18s 6d ; subsidy, £125 ; B«€*, 17« ;— total, £132 15s 6d. — Received. The Receiver of Gold Revenue, Naseby, wrota eta.ting that Gray's Extended Company was in tbe w*me of John Shears Gray, whose whereabouts he did not know. Toe ren? due from this leasehold was £15 for the period from February 21, 1897, to February 26, 1893. It w*B pointed eu« that there were others interested in the venture, but as their names were not entered on tbe register the county had no cUim on them. On tb* 7th intt. tbe license was tendered for cancellation by oae of the Naaeby solicitors who htd received it from Duuedin for the purpose, aud informed the registrar that his instructions were that Gray's whereabouts was not known. The surrender h«d not been acoepted for the following reasons :— (1) That the rent was in arrear ; •nd (2) that there was no written surrender by the lioensee Gray, rent notioe to him having been returned from the dead letter office. Uftder these circumstances the registrar considered tb*t it wdfild be as well to cancel the lioense. As the cou&oll were interested he «»k«d instruotioos from them in the matter. — The coaacil decided to recommend that the license be cancelled.

Mm Jordan, Duoback, wroie applying for permission to open the road in front of her house to lift a number of pipes belonging to her tb«t had been laid across the P*lmeraton-Dunb»ck road. — The application was granted, subjact to the work being done under the supervision of tbe inspector, on the motion of -Oc Kennedy, seconded by Cr ISBISTBtt.

Mr P. ftTLeod, Waihemo, wrote applying to have a altdge or horse track formed to his run from his freehold adjoining. He also afked to h«ve some side cuttings and levellings done about the river crossing to his sheep yards at tbe road lino between 6ectiou 3, blsck IV, Highlay, and section 1, block XIII, Swinburn ; also some repairs to the road from main ro;ul to and across the river at Dolphin's. If there w*s not (sufficient land fund to do all the work at once he asked to have the most urgent curried ou t. — The application was referred to tho innpector to interview Mr M*Leod and to report to council at next meetiDg.

Me Ewan M'Donald, Waihemo, wrote stating that nothing would have induced him to give the deviation in his land except; the council's promise to form a road capable or fit to enable a threshing mill to get into his paddock. But the council did not do th's, for apart from the many curves of 9ft to the chain no sane person would attempt to take a machiue over blue stone covers, &c. The speciflcatious submitted to him were a nullity, and the council's object seemed to ba to cut up and disfigure his land, and destroy the road and land by placing an embankment half a chain on his land ; but as the m»«chief was done he submitted — (1) to rnnke the road in accordance with the specifications when granting the deviation ; (2) to remove the embankment off his land and the obstructions ; and (3) pay him £40 compensation for the old formation. To these and any other reasonable terms he was willing to agree to. — The letter was receiv«d.

An application for a slaughterhouse license was granted to Mr W. Little.

OTHER MATTERS

A. Clark drew attention to some obstructions on the road at Macraes leading to Mr C. S. Hay's run. — The matter-w*s left in the hands of the inspector.

The Inspector drew attention to the refusal or dilatoriness of some of the ratepayers in complying with the instructions of the council to chip the gone spreading on to the road lines opposite their prop«rti6B, when the matter was left in the hands of the inspector to put men on »nd have the goree chopped at the expense of

the personß interested after notice had been given them. — Cr J. Ross considered it -would be a good thing if landowners who had gowe hedges along 1 the county roads were compelled to keep them trimmed, which would prevent it from uprcading and save a good deal of trouble afterwards.

Oc Habtstonge moved and Cr Matheson Seconded — " That tenders be called for formation of a road oa the track leading from A. Q. Muir'n woodshed to Macraes." — Carried.

Cr Haststonge moved aud Cc Clark seconded — " That tsnders be invited for metalling the main Macraes road from the end of Steward's to Gifford's." — Carried.

Attention having been oalled to a nuisance Rnd eyesore in one of the • breeta at Macraes leading to ene of the churches, it was resolved to instruct the inspector to take action to have it removed.
