A SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT.
Wblvngton. September 17.
An experiment in cultivating wattle on » reserve at Wairangi, in the Waik»to, placed under the control of the Department of Agriculture some years ago, has pivvsd highly successful. Nearly 900 acres have already beea planted, and preparations are being mada to cow another 120 sere*. The reserve contains. 1400 acre?, and it, is expected that in another year wattle will be growing all over the property and tbe department will be in a position to supply exsellent bark for tanning purposes at lower rate* than are paid for the imported article. A small plant for crushing bark is on the farm, aud the erection of a shed for its ftccomtnodfitton has jmb been completed. The bark, which realises from £5 10a to £7 per ton, is said to be of ii'st cl&ea quality. A uunbec of fcebtlt-ra in tbe W.Mkato ara also cultivating w»ttl«, and there is reason to believe that in a few ytiirs New Zealand will, be able to produce sufficient bark to meet the requirements of the, whole colony.
