The following team has beea picked by the Athletic Association to represent New Zealand at the Australasian Coampionship meeting in Sydney : — Holder, M"K««.n, Eruara, Rhodes, Hawthorne, Sfartin, Wilsoo, and Brown, if the last-named can get leave ■ Hawthorne has been elected mauag-er ef the team.
Great indignation exists in Auckland and Wellington ath'e ie circles at the uo accountable action of the Selection Committee ia not choosing A J. Patrick (Wellington), the champion sprinter, for the New Zealand team for Australia. Auckland considers him as the next man to be picked after Holder, and surprise ab his non-inclusion is general.
THE AMATEUR DEFINITION,

In reference to the remarks by fcbe English Rowing Association on sending Home an Australian t-ighb-oared crew by public subscription, ib is supposed to. be a reply to a query made by the local association as to whether there would be any objection to this course. The reply is not regarded rs peremptory. The local authorities are convinced that they could make it clear to the English Association that the crew would be composed of honajide amateurs.
SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS. London, September 6,
Percy Cavill has acospted Tyer's challenge to swim for the long-distance championship at Suuderland, also for a sea race at Blackpool.

The match between Nnttall (Kngland) and Ernest Cavill (New South W«lea) for the Championship of tbe World and £500 a-side was swum at Donoaster yesterday, and was witnessed by great crowds. Nuttall forged ahead from the start, and at 800 yards, where Nattall was leading by 25 yards, the Australian gave up. Nattall finished easily, beating bhe record for the distance. Time, Gmin 38iec.
Nuttall won bhe toss and selected the right hand side of the baths. He was quickest away, and when 30 yards had been covered he led Oavill by two yards. By the time the fourth length of tbe baths had been negotiated he had increased his advantage
bo six lengthy and he kept steadtlj Inoreasin^ it until Oavill retired. Prior to the raofi the betting was 6 to 4 on Nuttall.
Tyers and Percy Cavill have arranged to swim a mile between the piers at Blackpool on the 18th, five quarter miles at Blackpool on the 22ad, and half a mile in the lake at Manchester or Hollingaworth before the 30fch.
