PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

Mr R T. Aitken, the inspector, has forwarded to Mr E. Quick, hoD. secretary of the Ofcago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, his report for the six months end Lag the 30bh June last. From this we m&ke the following extract: — Seventy-tbree casea of alleged cruelty to animals were investigated as under : 12 cases were not prosecuted for want of sufficient evidence ; 10 persons were prosecuted ; 6 persons were convicted and lined ; 1 person (a schoolboy) was convicted and discharged with a caution ; 3 cases were withdrawn ; ♦ horse?, suffering in consequence of being completely worn out, were destroyed at my request. Fifty-nine persons were cautioned for various offences as under : 9 for working horses when suffering from wounds under the harness ;' 14 for working .horses when suffering from lameness ; 3 for working horses when weak and unfit to be worked ; 3 for cruelly beating and illtreating horses ; 10 for overloading and overdriving horses ; 4 for keeping horses and cattle without sufficient food ; 3 for working bullocks when in si weak state and- unfit to be worked ; 1(a farmer) for keeping about 350 sheep and lambs "without sufficient food ; 1 for illtraatiog a pat lamb (a school boy) ; 2 for illtreating cat* (two schcol boys) ; 1 for illtreating rabbits (* rabbifcer) ; 4 for carrying fowls by the feet, their Leads hanging down ; 2 for overcrowding and, improperly conveying poultry by train, &c. lne total fines, including costs, inflicted on ■.fJFS?-?? « PQr°BecutedP Q r ° Becut ed durieg the »ix months were ;fcii ioa ods
