(a) Bold play on the part of White and worthy of a better result. How very different in cliai acter and how much more interesting than most of the usual match games ! Although Mr Showalter lost the match we think most players will agree in the opinion that he deserved to win it.-CH. Ed. O.W. The tenth game was a very fine example of Showalter's forceful strategy in the cqmplical ed positions arising from the Q B P's opening. The attack was commenced early by 1G B-B 2, and it required all Pill&bury's ingenuity to ward it oft" over the thirtieth move ; his queen was given up for two rooks, but Showalter'a X B, supported by centre pawns, aided by the queen, kept the defending minor pieces blocked, and the euding was for some moves only a matter of time. The play on both sides was of a very high order, and although continued up to nearly 70 moves, there is nothing dull or tedious about this instructive and interesting ending. — Bristol Times and Mirror.
