NOTES BY AMATEUR.

The chief honours of the thirty-third amateur athletic meeting at Manchester, on July 3, fell to the celebrated walker, W. J. Sburgess (Polytechnic Harriers), who, in the four miles walking race, covered the distance in 28min 24: ec. America, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales were all represented, and a great deal of interest was excited. There are a splendid lot of amateur athletes in training, notwithstanding the fact that some of the highest class performers were expelled from the ranks last year, and have since become professionals. Yet the sport was of good clacs and new champions were created. If Sturgess was the only one to beat record the wind was certainly against great performance!. The southerner led off well by the aid of A. E. Relf (Finchley H.), who won the Half-mile in 2inin faec ; W. S. Hippie (New York A.C.) finishing tourbh. The 100 yds was somewhat of a surprise when it fell to J. H. Palmer (Essex Bsaglen) in 10 4-ssec. The L.A.C. representative, O. E. H. Leggatt, won the High Jump with sft 9in, and Soihsam being absent in the Pole Jump James Pool© (Windermere) secured it with a clearance of 9fb lOvMn. Godfrey Shaw did not defend his title in the Hurdles, which fell to Trafford (Birmingnam A.C) inl7|sec. Horgavi again won the Puttirig the Weight; Championship with 45ft 4in. A . E. Tyßoe (Salford H.) was responsible for the Mile Championship in 4min'27soc ; S. Elliott (Goldsmiths' Institute) won the Quarter Mile ; and C. E. H. Leggatt algo won the Long Jump at 21ft 4in. T. F. Kiely (Gaelic A. A.) won Throwing the Hammer, his record being 142f b sin. The Four-mile Flat Rice was won by O. Bennett (Finchley H.) in 20min 52i?sec, and tbe Twomiles Steeplechase by G. H. Lee (Polytechnic H.) in 12min lb 3-ssec.
