GORE.
July 27. — A mild sensation was caused among parents towards the close of last weefc, when Mr W. D. Boyd, truant inspector, summoned some half a dozen persons for neglecting to send their children to school. In ?ome casps small fines were imposed by Mr Hawkins, S.MT Church Meeting — The annual meeting of parishioners of Holy Trinity Church was held on the evening of Wednesday, 21st inst. As usual, the attendance was small. The Rev. A. R. D. Tosswill, our new vicar, occupied the chair. The annual report feelingly referred to the late Rev. T. L. Stanley. It stated that, owing to the efforts of the ladies and the curtailment of expenditure, the current debt had been reduced. The ordinary contributions, however, had shown a falling off during the year of .£23. The " all nations " fair and three socials had helped lo augment the funds. During the year an organ had been purchased, and the committee thought that the time had arrived when steps should be taken to p»y off the liability of £50 upon the church grounds. The Sunday school report showed the institution to be in a flourishing condition. Mr Tosswill took the opportunity to thank parishioners for the cordial reception they had given him. Building.— The building trade is fairly brisk here just now, though nothing to warrant more than passing comment; Mr A. Latham is the successful tenderer for the erection of a brewery in place of that rec ntly destroyed by fire. Messrs Drummond, Martin, and Matbeson are calling for tenders for t^hp erection of a new building (brick or wood) for the Standard, the site, I understand, being almost opposite the athenaeum. B:sides this, several dwelling houses have been erected lately. Rents are pretty high. Druids' .Social. — On Wedne day evening, the 21st, a vevy enjoyable social whs hwld in the Oddfellows' Hill by the local lodge of Druids. There was a good attendance. Bankruptcy. — A meeting of creditors in the estate of John Smaill, to have been held yestevday (Monday), lapsed for want of a quorum. A letter was read from the deputy official assignee at Inveicargill Faying that, he would not attend unless hi* t-xpeuses were guaiante<-d. This has led several business psople to consider the matter of having a resident assiguee appointed. The Weather.— During the last week or so the weather has been very bad, with snow, rain, and wind, but yesterday broke fine again, and it gives some promise of keeping so.
