Notes and Criticism.

"X. Y. Z." writes :— " Regarding Problem 1481, by W. J. Marah, in which he corrects Problem 34 in Lees's Guide, I should like to point out that this problem has already been corrected. If Mr Marsh looks up the list of corrections at the end of Lees's Guide he will find 'his correction' of JM'Uaughie's problem there." Mr A. Robbie, Isla Bauk, Southland, writes under date June 26:— "1 nave been trying Problem 1476, by J. i ices, and 1 fail to get a win for Black. I generally can solve the most of the problems in the Witness, but this one has baffled me, and I would like if anyone can show me a win at variation (6). Position h Black man on 1, , ks 14, 23 ; White men on 13, 19, ks 6, 26. Instead of 19 16, I play 26 31, 23 16, 31 27, and I don't think Black can win after 31 27 is played."— [Mr Marshall, Dunedin, sends similar play.]
