The Board of Trade have received, through the Foreign Office, a gold watch and chain for Mr John Wilson (master), a binocular glass for Mr George Ross (first mate), and gold medals for Gilbert Martin (quartermaster), and James F. Mouat (boatswain) of the s.s. Fifeshire, of Glasgow, which have been awarded to them by the President of the_ TJnited States in recognition of their heroic services in effecting the rescue of the shipwrecked crew of the American ship Pattician on August 28 last. The latest addition to the P. and O. Company's splendid fleet is the s.s. Egypt, recently launched by Mesßrs Caird and Co., of Greenock. She is a vessel of 7200 tons gross. She will have engines of 11,000-horse power, will carry 500 passengers, and be classed 100 Al at Lloyds'. The completion of the new- cruisers Terrible and Powerful is an event of historic interest. They have a displacement of 14,200 tons each, and aie by far the largest cruisers in the world, as well as being the swiftest vessels of this class. Their speed is 21£ knots, or about 25 mileß, an hour. They are a notable, advance in warship building, because they combine in somedegree_ the swiftness of the cruiser type with the immunity from shell fire of a battleship. Not only are they efficiently protected with arinoiir-plating, but they have a powerful armament of 47 of the most modern and deadly guns, the biggest of which weighs over 20 tons. Of this she took on board at Townsville: 1592 bales, 103 casks tallow, 1600 cases meats, 5 pkgs sundries, 5048 forequartew, 5959 hindquarters, 193 pieces beef, and 320 carcases mutton At Rockhampton : 3293 bales, 67 casks tallow, 371 hides, 6425 cases meats, 320 bags horns, 3i bales leather, 2 pkgs sundries, 122 forequartere, 5669 hindquarters, 2578 pieces beef, 37 bags, 159 pkgs mutton. At Brisbane : 684 bales. 33 casks tallow, 1? do pelts, 8131 cases meats, 5 pkgs sundries, 2641 forequarters, 3252 hindquarters beef. At Lyttelton: 24,227 carcases mutton and 500 cases kidneys. The s.s. Kawatiri, from the Bluff, steamed into the graving dock on Thursday for cleaning and painting. During the week ending July 11 the following ressels have been at the Dunedin wharves :— Arrivals : Herald, s.b., 356 tons; Isabella Anderson, schooner, 97 tons; Corinna, s.s., 820 tons; Napier, s.s., 48 tons (twice); Poherua, s.s., 749 tons ; Wakatipu, s.s., 1258 tons ; Waihora, s.s., 1269 tons ;—total, 4645 tons. Departures : Invercargill, s.s., 123 tons; Enterprise, brigantine, 84 tons; Napier, s.s., 4S tons; Poherua, s.s., 857 tons; Marmion, schooner, 92 tons; Herald, s.s., 356 tons ; Corinna, b.b., 820 tons; Wakatipu, s.s., 1258 tons ;—to J 1, 3282 tons. The s.s. Waiaora, from Sydney, via East Coast eortj, arrived at Port Chalmers at 9.30 p.m. on Sunday. She left the U.S.S. Company's iMargaret street wharf, Sydney, on June 30, at 5 p.m., and reached Auckland on the sth inst.
The rush to the Coolgardie goldfields is gradually subsiding— people are paying attention to more sensible things.
