ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society wa3 held &t ths secretary's office, Exchange Court, on Tuesday, 6th inst. ; present — Messrs J. P. Maitland (chairman), A. C. Begg.-R. Chisholm, P« F. Stoddart, J. Edgar, A. C. Stronach, G. M. Marshall, R. Campbell, H. Buokland, R. Forrest, S. Goldsmith, D. Russell (secretary), andF. Deans (manager.) THE MANAGER'S BEPOET. The manager reported as follows for Juae :—: — " The stock fish have nearly all spawned, and the following are the quantities of ova obtained ■ from the various kinds : Loch Leven trout, 44,000; Scotch burn trout, 179;000 ;, brook" trout, 43,000 ; salmon, 36,000 ; and brown trout, up to date, 87,000. A few of the three-year-old salmon have spawned, and aboub 2000 were obtained from them. Banger M'Cormack is busy keepiDg an eye on the streams, and assists in collecting ova - when an opportunity occurs, bnt the want of water is much felt in many of the streams north of Milton. If there should ' be any orders for ova, the first taken of the stock fish are now ready for sending. About 400 young perch were sent to Mr Flint, Ophir, bat I have not heard how they arrived at their destination. I intend getting some more as aoon as the lagoon is again low enough for that purpose." The report was received, and it was resolved to request the manager to keep a record in future of the number of ova obtained from the traps. - -MARINE HATCHERY. 16 w»i cesolved to unite with the Otago
Institute in ' their proposal to establish a marine hatchery at Purakanui UNLAWFULLY SHOOTING DEER. It was resolved—" That a reward of £10 be offered to anyone giving such evidence as will lead to & conviction against anyone shooting deer unlawfully in the Blue Mountains (Tapa nui) district." CONFERENCE OF SOCIETIES. The- Chairman said the Wellington society had written to them as to a conference of the various acclimatisation societies, and the Ofc&go societ j had suggested that the conference should be held at Chriatchurch. The Wellington society now wrote stating that all the societies, except one, agreed to Wellington, and it was considered that it would be better to adhere to the plan of holding the conterence at Wellington. It was decided lo fall in with the suggestion to meet at Wellington. THS POLLUTION OF THE LEITH. Messrs A. Steven and Co., millers, wrote asking the society to appoint one or more of its members to wait on the City Council to support, with others, a petition respecting the pollution of the Water of Leith. It was resolved — "That Mr Forrest and Mr Goldsmith be appointed to represent the society before the City Council." STIRLING. A letter from the Stirling society as to the stocking of the lower reaches of the Molyneux was referred to the executive.
