The Hastings Standard gives currency to a rumour that the libel action of the Hon. J. G. Ward against the Napier Telegraph has been settled oub of court. A man named Louis Doyle, a commercial traveller, was committed for trial at Wellington on Friday on a charge of stealing a bicycle. The machine was taken out of the ante-room of one of the clubs in broad daylight, and was sent by the accused to an auctioneer. Within a few minutes it was recognised by a gentleman who had sold it only a few weeks previously, and the owner was promptly sent for. Doyle's story was that it was given him by a man named Evans. The same prisoner, who has been drinking heavily, was lately sentenced to a month for obtaining money under false pretences by menus of. a valueless cheque*
