Obituary Notice. — It is with great regret that I have to record the death of Mr Moses Edwin Manuel, which took place early on the morning of Sunday, 2nd inst. The melancholy event was not unexpected, as Mr Manuel had been in failing health for some weeks ; but none the less his departure will be sincerely regretted. He has been a resident of Tuapeka for more than 30 years, and had made hosts of friends, by whom he will be greatly missed. A prominent miner for many years at the Blue Spur and at the Teviot, he had latteriy devoted himself entirely to the cultivation of an orchard, which yielded a good income, lie took a strong interest in politics, in education, aud in every movement which was likely to j benefit the district in which he lived. He was | possessed of great business ability, was upright and honourable iirtie dealings, and was genial to all. A good citizen, a good husband, a good father, it will be long befoie his memory fades from 1 among us. He leaves behind him a family of five, j who are grown up, and who are well provided for. The following is a sketch of his career : — Mr Manuel was a native of Lanner, in Cornwall, I where he was born in 183 i, and he was therefore at his death in his sixty-third year. He left Home in February 1854, with Mr James ! Kitto, of Moa Flat, to whose courtesy I am in- j debted for much of the information iD this notice. ' The two friends left Liverpool in the ship Saldanha, and after a voyage of three months landed in Melbourne. Thence they went to Forest Greek and Avoca, and subsequently to Mary- ] borough and Blaekman's Lead. They did very j well at these places, it being worthy of mention that at Avoca they found an lloz nugget. After several removals they pitched their tents at Creswick Creek, the pioneers of a great rush. After a considerable stay there Messrs Kitto and

a T Manuel proceeded to Ballarat, whore they arrived t just three days before the famous affair of th« Eureka stockade. From their tents on a neigh* c bouring hill they heard and saw the conflict, of J which Mr Kitto recollects several thrille ing incidents. After two years' stay aft , ■ Ballarat Mr Manuel returned Home and j married. He returned to the colony in 1 .- I the Itoyal Charter, then making her first trip, • c in the year 1857. After visiting several places lit 3 , Manuel, in company with his old frioud Mr Kitto, b visited Chines, where he lost his wife. In 186 i t they came to Otago. and were among the first miners in Muuro's Gully, where they did very I well, and where Mr Manuel took a leading part i in establishing a Wesleyan Church. Leaving : , Munro's Gully, he worked his way up the Clutha, ! Valley even to the Shotover, where he had several 3 hazardous adventures. He paid a return visit to 3 the Blue Spur, and thence to "Victoria, where ha - i married for the second time. He then returned 1 to Coal Creek, where ho resided to the day of his ■/ ! death. It is with pleasure that lam able to state, that Mr Manuel was uniformly successful in nil I his ventures. He was also wonderfully steady 2 and abstemious— virtues which were not too l - common among the men of the early fifties. He i wrs thus enabled to leave a comfortable in- ; ! heritauce to his widow and children, who have 3 the heartfelt sympathy of their many friends vu 3 their time of trouble. i .
