There were extraordinary proceedings iv connection with the election of a school committee at Motupiko, in the Nelson district There had baen a long dispute and rival factions regarding the school teacher, rn*ny of the parents heading their children to a local private school or to a distant State school in couaeqaence ; bui lust year's committee and the secretary favoured the teacher. On Monday -the faction against the teacher elected a chairman before 8 o'clock, the time for the sbatutory meeting, aud he ruled '.lie propoaal of the othe? faction with regard to a chairman out of order. The meeting then proceeded to elec'u a committee, and immediately this was dove, amid considerable uproar, i the chairman ckclared fchab the committee I desired to transact private business, and ordered I thehou'eholdera to leave. Then ensued an indei scnbible scene. Ash sticks and pick-axe handles j were used, and the room was cleared by ejections from the doors and windows. The committee, barricading themselves in, elected a chairman and secretary. Previously the minute book had been snatched from the former secretary, and it was brought into town by the new secretary the following day, guarded by formidable weapous. During the vielee one man had his face badly cut, and several others had their ribs hurb by sticks. Another man lost his watch, chain, and trinkets. "The teacher waa carried bodily out of the room, crying for the police, and declaring that he was a prisoner. Eventually the police demanded admission, and obtained it. The householders of the teacher faction meanwhile met under police protection, and also elected a committee. The matter waa brought before the Nulson Educatioaßoard and the elections were declared void. Some assault cases will be a re3ult of the fracas.
