j The quarterly returns of attendance for fche j period ended 31sb March, 1397, which have been j compiled by the secretary to the Education j Board, show that there .were 218 schools in . operation in the district, employing 219 male and 300 female teacher*, besides 33 teachers of sewing. The number of pupils on the school rolls 9-v the beginning of the quarter was 20,885 aud afc fche end of the quarter 22,360, comprising 11,524 boys and 10,836 fjirls. The strict nvei age j attendance was 10,079 bojs and 9458 girls, j making a total of 19.517, being 253 more than the total for the previous quarter and 137 less than that for the corresponding quarter of 1896. The working average was 67 more than tho strict average — viz , 19,578, — being 239 more than the total for the previous quarter and 151 less than fchafe for the corresponding quarter of 1896 Tee averages at the city and suburban schools were : — K-iikorai 751, George street 710, Albany street 704. Normal 653, High street 632, Arthur street 53G. Caversham 526. Union street 518, Forbury 492, Noith-Eist Valley 479, Momington 478, Macandrew road 445, KensiDgton 334, Ravensbourne 214, Anderson's Buy 126, Wak&ri 103. The attendances at Oatnaru were : — South school 445, North 409, Middle 311. At the district high schools : — Port Chalmers 541, Tokoinairiro 254, Palmerston 265, Lawrence 239, Bilelutha 226. The school at Capbarn has now been closed.
