SONNET.

I knew a woman once whose cottage door

No beggar sought in vain ; no scortful word Repulsed them ; no reproach was ever heard From her mild lips ; and yet she was so poor— to very po:>r— that oft her narrow store, Prom bounteous giving, to herself was bare ; A woman grey with sorrows — bow'd with care ; Yet sad or weary, still a smile she wove. Much did I marvel at her placid mien, And often would I pause, with envious eye, To watch her play her lowly household part, And hear her quiet song ; and I would lean Dejectedly, and think a man might die With no grim fears, had he so pure a heart.
