GOLDFIELD BALLADS.
POLLY AND PISTER. | (Three years after.) w Whoae is tha hut so clean and white, btanding in the gully Where everything is gay and bright— Where everything is fully fared for, when life seems sweet? Why, that's the hut of Poll and Pete ! Young trees are growing all around, And there's a useful garden. And there's a fenced in bit of ground, The milking cow to yard in. Fowls are strutting, ducks are wobbling, A bubbly jock is hoarsely gobbling. A race comes downward frotu the creek To keep the fruit trees growing. And in the spring for many a week A cloud of bloom is showinp, The bees are working in a box, A grape vine's climbing up the rocks. All day Peter's hard at work, His arms are brown and hairy, And Polly labour does not shirk, In cither house or daiiy. She does not age, looks even younger, For Peter's love keeps still growing stronger. At evening Peter milks the cow, I And chops the kindling wood ; j Then has his tea, and you may vow ,' That Polljj's teas are good ; j He rays she's pivatty at the hops 1 , But just an augel frying chops. And when the meal, is quite got through, He tastes his greatest joy, Dandlmg his girl, who's number two, And talking to his boy ; j No chiidien ever cou'.d be sweeter, I They"io just another Poll and Peter. > Cash may be short, times may be bad, And marriage may be folly ; We'd be all right were we a,s glad As Peter is, and Polly. j Now, reader, if such joys you'd taste, i Take Poll's advice, " Don't wed in haste." ' April 1897. —A. W. !
