Notwithstanding the ff.cb that the night was in many respects an inconvenient one there was a numerous attendance. The hall was elegantly decorated with bunting, pictures, and evergreens, while the bijou stage was decorated to represent a handsomely appoiuted drawing room. A number of congratulatory speeches were made, and a pleasant evening spent. Recently the New South Wales Rowing ' Asuoc'ation wrote to the Victorian Rowing Association that unless the latter complied with the amateur definition adopted by the Sydney ' Conference last year a New South Wales crew i would not compete at the forthcoming intercolonial eight-oared contest. At a special meeting of the Victorian Association on the 23rd j it was iecided that, as it would require a j month's notice to make an alteration of the rules to bring them into conformity with the conference'a definition, pending another meet-
ing to consider the amateur question it was hoped that New South Wales would not withdraw from the contest. In consequence of the stand taken by the Victorian Rowing Association on the amateur question, the New South Wales Association have decided not to compete at the forthcoming intercolonial eight oared contest in Melbourne. The crew picked will cease training.
