SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS OF OTAGO.
The regular monthly meeting of the School Commissioners of Otago, held on Monday, was attended by Messrs J. P. Mai bland (chairman), J. Walker Baiu, James Green, William Dallas, and Alfred Baldie.
A letter was received from Mr A. Cruickshank p-otnsting against tho inclusion of a block of 6000 acres of low land of the Greenvale rua. — Ib was decided to inform Mr Cruickphank that the coinmisiioners could nofc sec their way in tbe interests of the trust to comply with the request — i.c , to withdraw the 6000 acres from tbe run.
An application was received from the attorney for the Otago Syndicate for permission to cut water races through runs 254b, 193, 202, and parts 175. — Declined.
Mr J. L. M 'Donald's monthly report was read and dealt with. It first state*! that several tenants had been summoned for arrears of reut, several had paid up, and some £611 16t 6d had been collected between 29th March audtli« 12ch inst. He forwarded a letter from Mr R. Keowu, lessee of section 19, bleck 111, Wendonside, asking the commissioners to aßsist him in getting a road to give access to the section.— The commissioners considered that it was a matter that ► hoald be attended to by the Southland County Couucil, as the council ha* the right to ti»ke the iTCiasary land for a road under the Public Works Acb. He also forwarded an application from the Sjufchl&nd County Council for a snbsidy for £20 for works on block XIV, Wendon. — Application declined, the commissioners having already given a hubstantia' subsidy for ths vTork. Mr M'Donald also recDmmeudpd fchat section 15, block IX, be brought under the Lmd Transfer Aot. — Mr M'Donald was authorised to bring the section under the acb. He forwarded a sketch of section 3 of 105, R&ntariogatura, and section 34. Oreti, and sbated that it would be advantageous to have certain road lines closed and others opened. — Mr M'Donald was authorised to mako the necessary application to the council to have this done.
The conditions of lease for Wendon and Greenvale runs, which are to ba offered for sale by auctiou to-day (Tuegday) by Mr H S Valentine, were laid on the table and approved.
It w<is moved by Mr Bain — " That in order to secure the leasing, it possibls, of the run known as Greersvale Run, the auctioneer be instructed to intimate *t the sale ihafc the commissioners ■will be prepared, by virtu * of tin powers .conferred upon them by clause 2 of 'The Public Bodies' Powers Act, 1837, Amendment Act, 1891,' to insert a covenant in the lease of said run granting a renewal for a farther term of 11 years ; rent for the extended term to b-s fixed by fche commissioners either by valuation or by arbitration, ag provided in the said acb." — Trie motion w*q seconded by Mr Dallas and agreed to, Mr Baldki' dissenting.
Tho Secretary reported that arrears of rent to the amount of £915 7% 91 had been collected since last meeting.
