ARAOHNE: A GRECIAN FABLE.

Many hundreds of year? ago there lived iv ancient Greece a clever dyer. This m.»n had an only daughter, of whom he was very prond, and, like her rather, she was very clever. This young lady helped to provide for their SniJtll dwelling by spirmtng or weaving, and it wn» said thn'j only the goddess Pallas c.'uld besb her By amJ-bye Arachnn (this young lady) gained such confidence in b/r woik that shy challenged the goddess Ler.solf. The neighbours and her parents advised her not to do ifc, but Arachne sill peraisbi d. One day while thz was weaving an oM woman canje tottering iubo the cohl-Age " Well," *aid Araohne, " what do you want ?" '• I ernie to advise you not to eaall'iuge the goddess,'' said the old wemau. Arachne was a. little frightened sfc first, bat auswered boldly, " I don't care ; the goddess is frighten to try." Afc that moment the old woman disappeared, but; in her place stood a beautiful young lady, ib was the goddess Pallas! "HTelam," said the goddess, aud after a short delay the two started weaving. When tho work was finished the goddess saw to her dittmay that she was benlea. In lur angff she snatched Am cane's beautiful work and tore ib to threads. Arachne was so offended and iudigaant that she put %n end to her lii.-.-. Tlie goddess, on rcflectiug a moment, saw Iho wrong she had done, and «o turned Ai'*cbi;o iu f o a spider — tbe most beautiful and arfcislio spinner in the world.
