ROXBURGH.

I April 5. — Rain fell caily on Sunday morning pretty heavily, and or and off throughout the day. The total rainfall for the quarter just past was S'Sfiin. Buggy Collision. — An accident, fortunately unattended by serious consequences, at least to ! the individual, happened to Mr R. J. Pilches on ! Friday night. He was driving home in a buggy belonging to Mrs Heron when he collided with another buggy, driven, I understand, by Mr Bsale, and also belonging to Mrs Heron. Mr Pitches was thrown out and Received a Rood shaking. One of the buggies was damaged about the wheels, some spokes being broken out. Mr Pitches'* buggy and horse came on home driverI less with his hat. Mr Pitches walked back to ' Shingle Creek, about a mile or two from where the acident happened. Constable Fouhy drove up on Saturday morning, and brought Mr Pitches to his home at Roxburgh. He was outwardly not much the worse for his shaking. •Valedictory. — The many friends of Miss Brown, mistress of the Moa Flat School, will be clud to hear of her promotion to the Waikaia School. Sbe has been some time at Moa Flat, nnd leaves behind many friends, who wish her every success in her new sphere. j Football. — The annual meeting of our local i football club has been called by \he secretary (Mr i Winchester) for Thursday, the Bth met. In ■ view of the tournament to be held at Alexandra I on the Queen's Birthday, players should practise hard. We have the makiugs of a good team, and it is only by practice that we may excel Musical. —A juvenile concert under the leadership of Mr T. L. Mormon, conductor of our ; orchestral society, will be held shortly, the object being to raise funds for the athenceuru, which has f a debt of £230.— The Roxburgh Orchestral I Society are at present actively rehearsing or [ practising the for the Scotch concert 1 they intend giving soon to defray the debt on 1 their instruments. The society also intend to reproduce during the winter that well-known operetta "Trial by Jury," by Gilbert and Sullivan. Mr Morrison ia to be conductor. While on the topic of concerts I may mention that the I rehearsals for the lvcal school concert are proj greying favourably under the management of th<3 teacher*, Mr Reilly an'l Miss Sutherland, kindly assisted by Miss Coop We may look for the concert perhaps in a month's time. The kiudeispiel to be presented is called "The Happy F«uni!y." Socials.— This month inaugurates a pop.il.ukind of amusement— socials. Lwt Thursday ; evening the local Oddfellows' Lodge gave a social ■ iv the Athenreum Hall, the occasion being the 1 presentation of cmb.'oms to some of the members. I I underbtand that the lodge celebrates its anniversary this year by a soiree and ball on Friday, May 21 — On Friday evening tbe Coal '"veck School Committee held a social in the Athenteum Hall. Ths attendance was large. Several vecal J items were given, and dancing was keot up till after midnight. Amusements. — We had a visit last Wednesday evening from Mr John Fuller and Company's Myiiorama. The attendance was very fair, and ' the audience duly appreciated the many views ' shown a; d the numerous sentimental and comic 1 songs and instrumental items Borough Council. — The usual monthly meet- j ing of the local borough council was held on ) Thursday evening. Mr Jeffery made the usual declaration and took his seat ; he has lately been elected a councillor There was some discussion on the waterworks extension s'heme, and steps are to be taken to rnioe the p-oposed loan. Some time will necesaarily elapse before the reservoir can be commenced. A meeting' of ratepayers has to be callad to decide whether a loan shall be called or not. Then tsnd V 4 I'ave fo be railed for the 10-*n, taking up .mother month. And after j all this praliminary work, tenders for the whole work, or perhaps parts of lr, will be called. After j due consideration of the Fame a certain tender i 3 accepted, and, lo ! the new reservoir is com- ' menced. Perhaps we shall have a holiday on the day of laying the foundation stone. Who knows? There is evidently a good deal of preliminary woik to be done in connection with the new waterworks, and I suppose it will be some time < next spring before we will have an unfailing j water supply Ecclesiastical.— The Rev. G. E. Poole, of Alexandra, conducted service in the local Wes- , ley»n Chuicb on Sunday evening In tbe morning he preached at Ettrick, and in the afteraoon took the atrvice at Coal Creek Licensing. — We have another good licensing committee. Very little interest was taken in the matter here, but some regret was expressed at neither of our local candidates getting in.
